Our Mission

The National Pharmaceutical Association is dedicated to representing the views and ideals of minority pharmacists on critical issues affecting health care and pharmacy, as well as advancing the standards of pharmaceutical care among all practitioners.

Our Vision

To support a system of education and professional training which assure the public the availability of competent personnel to the accepted functions of the practice of pharmacy, especially disenfranchised communities.

To promote good health by providing information for the safe effective use of medications by members of the health professions the general public.

To provide information on current topics and medical products services through newsletters, journals, conventions and zone meetings.

To encourage interest in the practice of pharmacy as a career, especially among minority students.

To encourage and maintain relations with members of other heatlh professions and their respective organizations by being a voice on public policy issues affecting and in representing minority patients and pharmacists.

To maintain lines of communication between the organization and its membership so that their needs are accurately represented.

To provide continuing pharmaceutical education for its members.

To pursue such other lawful purposes within its corporate powers as may be approved from time to time by the House of Delegates or Board of Directors.

President

Marisa A. Lewis is the President-Elect of the National Pharmaceutical Association and the former Executive Director of the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA). She served in this capacity from 1989 to 2006.

Born the second eldest of six children, Marisa is the first of five pharmacists in the family. She has eighteen years experience as an academician, and several years experience as a practicing pharmacist. Lewis received a B.S. degree in Pharmacy from Texas Southern University, and a PharmD from Florida A & M University. Her MPH degree with a concentration in Health Systems Management was obtained from Tulane University School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine.

Currently, Lewis is an Associate Professor and Director of the Division of Health Care Management, in the School of Allied Health Sciences at Florida A & M University (FAMU). Marisa also practices pharmacy at Capital Regional Medical Center.

Her professional affiliations include the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), National Association of Health Services Executives and the National Pharmaceutical Association (NPhA). Marisa is on the National Pharmaceutical Association (NPhA) and the NPhA Foundation Board of Directors.

Awards and recognitions include the 2005 Aetna African American History Calendar- featured career, 2004 NPhA Chauncey I. Cooper Service Award, the Diversity Leadership Award for best presentation of teaching techniques from the Association of University Programs in Health Administration, Florida A & M University Service Award, Teaching Incentive Program Award and Teacher of the Year Award, both from Florida A & M University. Other recognitions include Glaxo Pathway Evaluation Program- featured career and Women in Pharmacy Leadership- featured biography. Lewis is also the recipient of two NPhA Presidential Commendation Awards.

For six months in 2002, Marisa had the pleasure of serving as Interim First Lady of Florida A & M University. In 2000, Lewis was the primary spokesperson for the Medicine Cabinet Safety Campaign, and an auxiliary spokesperson for the Partnership for Self-Care Campaign, both joint projects of APhA and McNeil Consumer Health Care. In addition, she has held an appointment on the NABPLEX Review Committee, a consultant with Merck Managed Care and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). Marisa also served on the U.S. Pharmacists Editorial Advisory Board.

Other professional experience includes Medical Information Specialist with Owen Healthcare, Inc., Assistant Professor at Xavier University of Louisiana, College of Pharmacy, and staff pharmacist in retail/community and health system pharmacies.

Marisa volunteers with Catholic Charities of Tallahassee, Christmas Connection, and the Tuskegee Neighborhood Association. She is an active member of the Co-Cathedral of St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

Marisa is married to Dr. Henry Lewis III.

Dr. Jo Ann Merriwether Spearmon is Special Assistant to the Director/FDA Office of Executive Programs. Prior to starting her new position in February 2009, she was the Director of Health Promotions for the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) MedWatch Program. She is a Commissioned Officer with the United States Public Health Service Corps, holding the rank of Captain,

Before to coming to FDA, Captain Spearmon served as Chief of the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) of the Division of Service Systems (DSS) of the HIV/AIDS Bureau (HAB). As Branch Chief, she established ADAP priorities to assist in carrying out the Department of Health Resources and Services Administration/HIV/AIDS Bureau's mission and to respond to new or emerging issues that impact the planning and delivery of HIV services. Dr. Spearmon and her staff were responsible for monitoring 57 State and Territorial ADAPs with a budget of $728 million for Fiscal Year (FY) 2004. These programs were established to provide drug therapies to treat HIV disease and to ensure that these treatments are integrated with the system of care services funded under the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act.

Dr. Spearmon came to DSS from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), where for over three years she served as a Regulatory Review Officer with the Division of Drug Marketing, Advertising, and Communications, assigned to monitor prescription drug products in the anti-infective therapeutic category of medications. Prior to her work at the FDA, she spent six years as a Supervisory Pharmacist and the Adverse Drug Reaction Coordinator at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C. Before St. Elizabeths, she worked as a Supervisory Pharmacist for the District of Columbia's Department of Human Services Ambulatory Health Care Administration.

Jo Ann received a Certificate of Public Health from Georgetown University, a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from the University of Maryland at Baltimore, a Masters of Public Administration Degree from the American University in Washington, D.C., and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy from Howard University College of Pharmacy. She is currently participating in the Georgetown University Certificate in Public Health Program. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Past-President of the National Pharmaceutical Association, and a member of numerous professional pharmacy organizations.

Dr. Sharon I. Early received a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from the University of Maryland at Baltimore and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy from Howard University College of Pharmacy, and has been a preceptor at Howard University College of Pharmacy from 1998 to 2004. She served on the Board of Directors for Applied Career Training (Allied Health School) for 4 years as the Pharmacy Department Advisor. Dr. Early has over 35 years of extensive pharmacy experience to include retail management, managed care and research industry. Her areas of expertise consist of Pharmacy Administration, Development of Clinical Trial Protocols, Project Management and Administration, Staff Development and Improvement and Event Coordination. Dr. Early presently works for Walmart Stores Inc. as a Regional Talent Specialist.

Prior to working at Walmart Stores Inc., Dr Early was the Director of Pharmacy Operations for Kaiser Permanente Inc. Washington D.C. As Director of Pharmacy Operations, she created and implemented "A Best Practice Program" (Green Dot Program) designed to expedite the prescription filling process. She also worked with the Success IV (Successive Celebrex (Celecoxib) Satisfaction and Effectiveness in Osteoarthritis) Study to review the protocol and present the study procedure to management and staff.

Dr. Early came to Kaiser Permanente Inc. from Braton Biotech Inc., (BBI) where for over 6 years as Director of Pharmacy Operations she served as a Study Coordinator and Associate Clinical Investigator for a pharmacy coordinated investigational drug service associated with the Neuropsychiatric Research Hospital. She has served on drug utilization committees, quality improvement committees and is experienced in clinical data management and clinical services. Before BBI, Dr Early worked for People's Drug Store for 20 years.

Sharon has worked with the Chauncey I. Cooper Pharmacy Action Committee from 1979 to 1990 and was the chairperson from 1988 to 1989. She was also a Founder/Charter member of the D.C. chapter of the Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.

Through my work on the NPhA newsletter I would like to help portray NPhA as a pharmaceutical association that is current in pharmacy affairs. Further I would like to see the continued expansion of NPhA to other parts of the United States, notably the west coast.

Kendra Roundtree currently serves as an inpatient pharmacist at Houston Healthcare Complex-Houston Medical Center in Warner Robins, Georgia. She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from Mercer University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. She also earned a Master of Business Administration from Mercer University Stetson School of Business and Economics.

Kendra served as an active member of Mercer University's chapter of Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) throughout pharmacy school. In 2005, Kendra was elected to the office of National President-Elect of SNPhA. During her 2006-07 term as National President of SNPhA, she focused on membership expansion for the organization, increasing the number of SNPhA members that go on to join NPhA, and implementing a mentorship program for members of SNPhA.

Kendra is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Her professional affiliations include the American Society of Health SystemsPharmacists (ASHP), National Pharmaceutical Association (NPhA), American Pharmacists Association (APhA), Rho Chi Honor Society, and Phi Lambda Sigma Leadership Society.

I feel that service to the profession is a vital part of every pharmacist's professional growth. I have always been committed to going beyond just working in the profession and I feel serving as treasurer of NPhA would afford me the opportunity to use my skill sets to benefit the organization. I am interested in the position of treasurer because I believe my training in business has prepared me for such a role. I also feel that the work I've already done as a national officer of SNPhA has allowed me to become familiar with what it takes to successfully serve as an officer of NPhA.

Erica Hanesworth, PharmD, BCPS, is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Primary Care at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston, SC. She received her Bachelor of Science (1997) and Doctor of Pharmacy (1999) degrees from the South Carolina College of Pharmacy (formerly known as the Medical University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy) where she also holds a clinical appointment of Clinical Assistant Professor. She completed a residency in Primary Care at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in June 2000. Her major areas of interests include diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia pharmacotherapy. Dr. Hanesworth is a member of the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists and the American Colleges of Clinical Pharmacy. She has also served as Zone II Director for the National Pharmaceutical Association since 2006 as well as a mentor for minority pharmacy students of the Student National Pharmaceutical Association.

Cornetta R. Levi, Pharm. D., MBA earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree at Drake University in 2007. She is a Staff Pharmacist with Walgreens Pharmacies based in Chicago, Illinois. Her work is concentrated in a Chicago urban community with a high diabetic, cardiovascular, and HIV/AIDS populations. She also serves as the Clinical Coordinator for the District 173, Pharmacy Internship Program. Dr. Levi serves as the co-chair of the National Pharmaceutical Association's (NPhA) President's Special Projects Committee. She is the Chronic Kidney Disease chairperson for NPhA's collaboration with Abbott Labs Chronic Kidney Disease Initiative.

During her college career, Dr. Levi was the Region three facilitator for the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) from 2005 - 2007. In 2004 -2006, she was the President of the SNPhA chapter at Drake University and was a member of the Board of Directors for Drake Pharmacy Unified Group of Students (DRxUGS). As a volunteer patient advocate at The Project of Iowa HIV and AIDS Center, which is the only HIV and AIDS clinic in Des Moines, she help bridge the gap between the patient's disease state and patient's understanding of their condition. Furthermore, Dr. Levi tutored clients who were actively pursing their GED degree. Throughout her time at the Center, she was a member of the planning committee for the World's AIDS Day events.

Dr. Levi's medical experience not only includes the field of pharmacy but also direct patient care. She has been a licensed paramedic in the state of Illinois for eleven years, at the University of Chicago Hospital, where she worked for years in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the hospital's burn center. In Des Moines, Iowa, she worked at Mercy Medical Center in their Level II trauma center. Prior to her hospital experience, Dr. Levi served as a member of the military services where she served her country proudly both domestically and abroad as a Medical Coreman for ten years.

Dr. Charisse Johnson is currently the Director of Experiential Education and Assistant Professor at Chicago State University College of Pharmacy.

Dr. Johnson received both her Doctor of Pharmacy degree (1998) and Master of Science degree in Pharmacy Administration (2003) from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy. Possessing formal teaching experiences in both didactic and experiential arenas with student pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, Dr. Johnson has served in various capacities as a guest speaker, course instructor, and graduate teaching assistant lecturing on topics such as regulatory policy, patient safety, and the pharmacist's role in community health.

Prior to joining Chicago State University, Dr. Johnson was the Professional Affairs Manager at the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. She has also has practice experience in community and health-systems pharmacy.

Dr. Johnson is currently a board member of the National Pharmaceutical Association and Chicago Pharmacists Association. She is also a member of Rho Chi Honor Society, Phi Lambda Sigma Leadership Fraternity, Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, and the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists. She has received a number of awards and accolades, the most recent being the Young Pharmacists Award from the National Pharmaceutical Association.

Dr. Weeks is currently a Clinical Account Manager with First Health Services Corporation where she provides clinical and managed care services to the District of Columbia and Montana Medicaid Programs. Dr. Weeks is also a Clinical Assistant Professor and Pharmacist Coordinator for an Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) course at the University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy.

After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from the University of Maryland, College Park, she received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. Dr. Weeks has presented on various topics both as a student pharmacist and pharmacist. In 2008, she introduced the "New Practitioners Caucus" at the 61st Annual NPhA Convention; an innovative initiative geared toward new and recent pharmacy school graduates.

Dr. Weeks has received a number of honors and awards, including the 2008 Terrence Burroughs Pharmacy Leadership Award.

Dr. Weeks has held a number of professional leadership positions including Secretary for the Maryland Pharmaceutical Society (MPhS), National Secretary for the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA), and Chapter President of SNPhA at the University of Maryland. At the present time, she is the Vice-President for MPhS. Most recently, Dr. Weeks was elected as a member of the Board of Directors for the Association of Black Health-System Pharmacists (ABHP) as well as the Board Liaison for the ABHP Council on Professional Affairs. In addition to her involvement with MPhS, NPhA, and ABHP, Dr. Weeks also belongs to a number of other professional pharmacy organizations including AMCP, ASCP/MD-ASCP, and ASHP/MSHP.

Dr. Anjanette Wyatt received her B.A. in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1987. She received her B.S. in pharmacy from Texas Southern University in 1991 and her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from TSU in 2003. Dr. Wyatt also serves as the Executive Director of the TSU Pharmacy and Health Sciences Alumni Association and is on the Board of the Gulf Coast Society of Health System Pharmacist and Remington College Pharmacy Advisory. She has beenlisted as anOutstanding Young American and is a recent NPhAEndowed scholarship donor.

Barry Bleidt is Professor and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the Texas A&M Health Science Center Irma Rangel College of Pharmacy. Previously was a founding faculty member at the Loma Linda University School of Pharmacy and Hampton University School of Pharmacy. He received his BS Pharmacy from the University of Kentucky, PhD in Pharmacy Healthcare Administration from the University of Florida, and his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Xavier University of Louisiana.

Barry is a Life Member of NPhA (since 1994) and was a founding member of the National Pharmaceutical Association Foundation. He was very proud to endow a SNPhA Scholarship through the Foundation in 2007. He started with NPhA at the 1988 meeting in Cleveland at the President's request (Dr. Wendell Hill) to become involved as a Parliamentarian. Dr. Hill also appointed him to Chair the Bylaws Revision Committee.

In 2001, he was honored to receive the James M. Tyson Award (NPhA's 2nd highest honor). Under Presidents Alex Taylor and Jo Ann Spearmon, Barry also served as Chair of the Site Selection Committee for the Annual Meeting and received a special Presidential Award from each leader.

Barry Bleidt is a practicing pharmacist and has over thirty-five years of professional experience in preventing and educating on drug problems and substance abuse. He has served as the Co-Chair of the Pharmacy Councils on Tobacco Dependence and Mental Health. He is an active member of numerous other professional societies. He has over 250 presentations and forty publications. Currently, he also serves as the Editor for the newsletter "Teaching the History & Social Aspects of Pharmacy.

Dr. Craig Ruffin is the founder and chief visionary officer of TL Ruffin Enterprises LLC. An award-winning professional speaker, career coach and healthcare consultant, Dr. Ruffin began his career with Merck, as a Professional Sales Representative. Successive assignments at Merck and Novartis strengthened his knowledge of the healthcare industry. These experiences served as a strong foundation for his move to Johnson & Johnson as Manager, Marketing Research.

During his years with Johnson & Johnson, Dr. Ruffin progressed through a series of assignments and promotions. Most recently, he served as Region Business Director with responsibility within the central nervous system franchise.

Numerous awards have been bestowed upon him, including three Johnson & Johnson Standards of Leadership Awards; the McNeil APEX Award; and, the coveted Johnson & Johnson Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Award for facilitating a summit to address specific needs of diverse populations affected by ADHD. Dr. Ruffin is also the recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Long Island University. He currently serves on the Council of Overseers for the Arnold and Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Long Island University, and is the Vice Chairman of the Board of Visitors for the Howard University College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. In addition, Dr. Ruffin is an Adjunct Professor at Howard University and Long Island University.

Dr. Ruffin earned his B.S. in Pharmacy from Long Island University, an M.B.A. from Columbia University and his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Florida.

Jacquelin Holland served as the Program Director of the Diversity Enhancement Program of The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute at The Ohio State University Medical Center until March 31, 2007 and is currently on staff as an independent consultant. She is a member of the Columbus Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society for which she is the historian and past chairman of the Community Outreach Committee. She was a Special Project Team member for the ONS program Clinical Trials: Opening The Doors For The Underserved and worked on two grant projects in 2006, HPV and Cervical Cancer and Breast Cancer Education. She has received both the President's Award and the Mentorship Award from her chapter. She has written and implemented several breast cancer grants for the Susan G. Komen For The Cure in Columbus. She currently serves as a concept paper reviewer for the California Breast Cancer Program, an advocate on the FDA National Mammography Quality Assurance Committee and the management team for the Lance Armstrong Foundation Survivorship Center of Excellence at The Ohio State University Medical Center. In 2009 she was elected as Executive Director of the National Pharmaceutical Association Auxiliary.

She is a past member of the National Black Leadership Initiative On Cancer, Columbus Chapter, past President of the Columbus Black Nurses Association, a board member of the Central Ohio Men Against Prostate Cancer, a member of the American Association For Cancer Research and serves on the Dean's Diversity Committee for The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. She has over forty years of experience in the field of nursing, thirty-four of those years as an advanced practice nurse. She is married to Benjamin Holland, a retired pharmacist and has one son David (wife Joanne, grandson Edward).

Dr. Carmita Coleman is the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the University of the Incarnate Word Feik School of Pharmacy.

Dr. Coleman holds a bachelors degree in chemistry from the University of New Orleans and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree with honors from Xavier University of Lousiana. Dr. Coleman completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at Hermann Hospital, Houston, Texas.

In 1999, Dr. Coleman joined the faculty as Assistant Professor at the Hampton University School of Pharmacy where she developed and taught a variety of courses, including the integrated components of Drug and Disease management. Dr. Coleman led the development of the Rho Chi chapter at Hampton University, and contributed significantly to student involvement in VPhA, VSHP, NPhA, and other organizations. Dr. Coleman's level of personal activity with the professional organizations led to her election to President - elect of the Virginia Society of Health System Pharmacists for 2004 and National Secretary for the National Pharmaceutical Association in 2003. She currently serves as the National Executive Director for the nation's premiere pharmacy organization for minority student pharmacists, the Student National Pharmaceutical Association.

Dr. Coleman has been involved in research since her days as a resident. She received a grant from the Merck Foundation to conduct research in Video Telepharmacy. Her grant was one of the 8, nationwide, selected for funding. Dr. Coleman has numerous presentations to her credit and a noteworthy collection of publications.

Bobby Price is currently a 4th year student at Mercer University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. He received his bachelors of science in Chemistry and Kinesiology from Georgia State University, while playing point guard for the Panthers men's basketball team. Bobby is also a "brother" of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity and where he served as Counsel of Students Representative, which is the appointed voice of the fraternity. Bobby's previous commitment to community service made transitioning into SNPhA a seamless process. Last year he served triple duty as Chapter President, host of Region's I and II meeting, and National President Elect. During this time he was able to begin and implement programming on both the local and national level such as feeding the homeless, health fairs, Cultural diversity festival, pharmacy medical school social, PCAT review, and the "Chapter Transition Folder". As President, his goals are to focus on membership development, create more efficient communication tools available on the website, improve chapter transitioning, raise chapter participation in clinical initiative programming by providing assistance, increase chapter outreach from the national to the local level, bridge the gap between SNPhA & NPhA and continue to move in the direction of our mission.

Aside from his professional duties Bobby enjoys staying heavily involved with ABC Elite Youth Foundation, an organization dedicated to mentoring disadvantaged youth, being with family, playing basketball, and traveling. His principles are dedicated to expanding diversity, helping those in need, and improving his fellow man.

Terrence Van Loren Burroughs is president of The Burroughs Management Group, Inc., a health care services firm serving the pharmaceutical industry since 1987, and he is a lifetime member of NPhA. In 1995, the National Pharmaceutical Association named Terrence "Pharmacist of the Year" at its annual conference held in Redondo Beach, California. In 2005, the National Pharmaceutical Association named an award after Mr. Burroughs titled, "The Terrence Burroughs Pharmacy Leadership Award", which recognizes individual contributions to the pharmacy profession through involvement at both the local and national levels. Terrence Burroughs is also the President and a founding member of the National Pharmaceutical Association Foundation (NPhAF.)
